TRANSCRIPTIONS, opening Friday, July 13 6-9pm, will feature work by Cindy Rehm (Los Angeles, CA) and Sheila Talbitzer (Omaha, NE) and will be on view through September 1st. Rehm and Talbitzer both utilize different forms of transcription in their work. Talbitzer eploys the documentation of patient medical records whereas Rehm often deciphers feminist critical theory.
Cindy Rehm’s process always begins with books. There is often a sort of bibliomancy as she follows threads through and between texts, to passages that inform and inspire her imagery. Her practice draws upon Symbolist art, the sentiments of surrealism, and the history of women’s art and writing. Rehm engages a visual vocabulary that speaks to interiority, erotism, and tactile memory through expressions of the subversive female voice and the leaky body. She composes narratives using imagery drawn from contemporary and historic sources to address the complex relationship between the female body, representation, and myth.
Rehm is a Los Angeles based artist and an educator. She serves as co-facilitator of the Cixous Reading Group, and is co-founder of Craftswoman House, a project dedicated to showing feminist work in nontraditional spaces in Southern California. Rehm’s work has been shown at venues including: Elephant; Los Angeles, Woman Made Gallery; Chicago, LACE; Los Angeles, Goliath Visual Space; Brooklyn, Paul Robeson Gallery; Rutgers, ARC Gallery; Chicago, Transformer; Washington DC, Interaction IV; Sardinia, Italy, the Archeological Museum; Varna, Bulgaria and at Mains d’Oeuvres; Saint Ouen, France.
Sheila Talbitzer’s work is derived from personal experience and the intense need for communication and connection. Talbizer will exhibit her latest series, Lidwina: Year One, which deals with her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Utilizing photography, embroidery and textile Talbitzer explores her changing relationship with her physical form in an effort to balance her medical interventions with her personal autonomy.
Talbitzer is a professor of photography at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha and has also held positions at the University of Notre Dame and Indiana University South Bend. She received her BA from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and her MFA from the University of Notre Dame. Talbitzer has exhibited at Louisiana State University Gallery, Spiva Center for the Arts, Crossroads Gallery, MCC Gallery of Art and Design, Blackbox Gallery, Museum of Nebraska Arts and Elder Gallery, Nebraska Wesleyan University.
TRANSCRIPTIONS is part of a series of collaborative and experimental projects facilitated by Darger HQ. Darger HQ connects artists to the world by creating collaborative working opportunities between local artists and national and international artists with related practices, and develops partnerships that benefit artists by providing new means of support through combined private and non-profit sources. Darger HQ also educates, enriches and exposes the community to some of the most innovative contemporary art being produced today.
