All attendees at 1 Million Cups events will honor the following values and practices that comprise the 1MC culture:
Safe & Supportive
1MC offers a safe place to share ideas and admit what you don’t know, whether you are here to present your business idea or to network and listen to a presenting entrepreneur. There are no sharks in this program.
Audiences are committed to being supportive of everyone who attends and presents by listening and offering constructive suggestions. This makes for a fertile learning environment.
Inclusive & Diverse
A vibrant entrepreneurial community must be diverse. Committed to breaking down barriers so all entrepreneurs can access the networks and resources they need, 1MC welcomes anyone with a desire to grow a business or has an interest in supporting entrepreneurs, regardless of their age, gender, ethnicity or education.
Everyone attending 1MC adds value, be they funders, serial entrepreneurs, stay-at-home parents building a business or civic leaders. And everyone has a voice and is encouraged to use it. No one person dominates.
Respectful & Considerate
Like all communities, people attending 1MC have different goals and roles. 1MC organizers are community members who volunteer their time to host local events. Presenters might not always have the most polished presentation. Some community members may be there for the first time and don’t know the culture yet. Be aware of the range of reasons participants have for attending and be respectful when engaging with others.
Any behavior that veers from respect and consideration is strictly off-limits. This can include:
Promoting or selling business products or services
Threats or language directed against another person
Discriminatory jokes and language
Sharing sexually explicit or violent language or material
Posting (or threatening to post) someone’s personal information
Personal insults, especially using racist or sexist terms
Unwelcome sexual attention
Advocating for, or encouraging, the above behavior
Repeated harassment of others. If you are asked to stop, then stop.
If you believe someone is violating the code of conduct, we ask that you contact the organizers in your community.
Enforcing the Code
Participation in the 1 Million Cups program is a privilege, not a right. The organizers of each local 1 Million Cups community are authorized to enforce this Code of Conduct and impose sanctions for any violations. As such, organizers have the discretion to:
Determine when conduct violates the Code of Conduct and which individuals have participated in that conduct;
Discuss the conduct that constitutes a violation with the individual accused of the conduct;
Impose sanctions for a violation that could include (among other things) contingencies for future participation, exclusion from presenting at or attending one or more 1 Million Cups events or revoking the person’s credentials for participation in 1 Million Cups online activities;
Report the specific conduct and the exclusion of an individual to:
Representatives of the venue at which a 1 Million Cups event is held, including any security staff;
Organizers of other 1 Million Cups communities;
Other participants attending a 1 Million Cups event within a community;
Representatives of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation;
Law enforcement (if a violation may also involve violations of the law).
The decisions by organizers are final. Any appeal for reconsideration must be made to the organizers who made the decisions.
Enforcing the 1 Million Cups Code of Conduct
If a community member believes someone has violated these guidelines, a community organizer should be notified. The organizer should do the following:
Respond immediately to the member issuing the complaint that the organizers will address the issue;
Ensure all organizers in that community are aware of the complaint;
Discuss the violation in person (or via the phone) at a meeting with all organizers (or all organizers that can attend a meeting with reasonable notice);
Reach a consensus among all organizers regarding the complaint and whether sanctions should be imposed. This process should include:
Specifically identifying the alleged conduct that violates the code;
Specifically identifying the person(s) alleged to have participated in the conduct;
Determining if enough information exists to confirm that that a violation did in fact occur;
If enough information does exist to confirm a violation has occurred, determining the appropriate sanction:
Telling the offending party that certain behaviors are perceived as problematic;
Issuing a warning about consequences that may flow from continuing behaviors;
Specifying steps the person who violated the code should take to remedy the violation (e.g., an apology);
Specifying steps the person who violated the code should take to change behavior (e.g., demonstrating changed behavior at future meetings);
Excluding from presenting;
Excluding from participating or attending;
Revoking on-line credentials, etc.;
If a violation has occurred, discuss the complaint and the specific conduct that resulted in the violation with the person accused of the conduct;
If sanctions are imposed, explain why and the time frame for which the restrictions will be in place, and any contingencies upon which the removal of the sanctions may depend;
If the complainant wishes to know an outcome, report back what has been decided
If a complaint is about an organizer, report the complaint to the Kauffman Foundation. The Foundation will engage the organizers as appropriate to discuss how the complaint should be addressed and any sanctions that should be applied to an offending organizer;
If organizers are in agreement that specifically alleged conduct amounts to a violation of the law or represents a threat to the safety of other participants, report this fact to both the Kauffman Foundation and to law enforcement.
