Join us on Sunday, February 25th at 2 pm for our second Sunday Series of the year. The History and Importance of the Stockyards will be presented by historian Gary Kastrick.
Today we compete for an Amazon Office or a Google Data Center, but in 1884, bringing a livestock market to the area, created an economic boom that would last for 7 decades. This industry was responsible for much of the early growth of the area. By the 1920s, nearly 15,000 workers clocked in at the Stockyards each day, many of them first-generation immigrants.
By 1957, the stockyard company, an astounding 19 different meatpacking companies, 40 commission firms, a special railroad just for livestock, and other companies – employed half of Omaha's workforce.
This presentation will continue to expand on our theme this year «From Trading Post to Online Marketplace.» We will be exploring Sarpy County’s history of consumerism, marketing and advertising.
