Synopsis: This “sort-of adaptation” of The Seagull by Anton Chekhov tells a story in which an aspiring young director battles against the art created by his mother’s generation. A young actress competes with an aging Hollywood star for the affections of a renowned novelist and everyone discovers just how complicated life, art and success can be. This irreverent, modern and very funny remix of a classic play will incite you to consider how art, love and revolution fuel your own pursuit of happiness.

NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR: Adult actors of all ages, genders, and ethnicities will be considered. Below are descriptions of what is indicated in the scripts (Posner’s and Chekhov’s), and not prescriptions for what must appear on stage.

Character descriptions:
MASH – (20s-30s) sarcastic, nihilistic, mildly depressed, and frequently cross, in love with Con; she serves as Emma’s cook/neighbor/helper; she sings and plays the ukulele*

DEV – (20s-30s) a mostly amiable guy, an earnest peacemaker who’s love for Mash is at odds with his friendship with Con; he sings and may play an instrument*

NINA – (20s) exuberant, lithe, charming, and charmed by the world around her; she’s a bit naïve but makes up for it in confidence and enthusiasm; she likes older men

CON – (20s-30s) a passionate and intense budding playwright in search of new forms; he’s in his 20s or 30s, but often behaves younger, the way that grown men who were spoiled as children often do; he’s deeply in love with Nina, but with maybe a bit of an Oedipal thing going on, too

EMMA – (40s-50s) a famous and successful actress, she’s regal, elegant, proud, and selfish; she is exactly 19 years older than her son Con, but she would prefer if you mistook her for his big sister, thank you very much

TRIG – (30s-40s) a successful playwright, he’s thoughtful, quiet, humble and unassuming in this very assuming little way that makes sure you can’t help but notice how humble he is; he is officially “with” Emma, but his eyes tend to wander

SORN – (50s) Emma’s older brother; he’s good-natured and accommodating, a bit bumbling at times, but well-meaning and kind

*Actors interested in auditioning for Mash or Dev should come prepared to sing 16-32 bars of a song, either a cappella or accompanying themselves with the instrument of their choice.
All actors auditioning will be asked to read sections from the script. These will be provided at auditions.
