On the Solemnity of St. Joseph it is the custom to decorate his altar with homemade breads, cakes, pastries, cookies, fruit, etc. Once a uniquely Sicilian custom originating in the middle ages, this tradition has spread to the entire universal Church. Bakers show off their skills and inspire souls, sometimes fashioning their baked goods in the shapes of crosses, lambs, lilies, flowers, and other Christian symbols. After viewing the craftsmanship of these donated goods, all of the foods are blessed after a special Mass and the “Tupa-Tupa” ceremony in which parish children dressed as St. Joseph, Mary or other Saints take part. The foods are then hand delivered to the homeless shelters and nursing homes in need and also serve as dessert for the customary free-will offering spaghetti luncheon that takes place afterwards. All donations to the luncheon will be given to our parish St. Vincent de Paul Society to assist those in need. Sponsored by our Knights of Columbus and Ladies Guild.
